Do you constantly have more tasks than you can handle, and more marketing opportunities than you have time for?

If you recognise the situation, you are not alone...
Most of us who work in marketing constantly have more tasks than we can get through, and more marketing opportunities than we have budget and resources to exploit.
If you are in a specialist role, you may have a manager responsible for strategy, action plans and budgets alike, which limits your ability to prioritise between your tasks.
If you are a manager, you probably have responsibility for several specialist areas, and you may have a director or a board setting the overall frame for your freedom to act.
If you own a smaller company or are self-employed, you certainly have financial constraints limiting your options.
The solution is to start by setting aside time to make a plan!
In a working life where there are always more tasks than you can get through, many people have no work-related dreams beyond getting the tasks done and hitting the month's budget.
If that is not satisfying for you, start by describing what you dream of achieving.
Your dream should be about what gives you personal and professional satisfaction – while at the same time lifting your results and creating value for the company.
Your plan should be short-term, because then you have a chance of actually completing it – so you can quickly get started on the next short-term plan.
To begin with, your plan should focus on efforts that free up time in your daily work.
That might for example be:
Automating routine tasks.
Making working processes more efficient.
Delegating or outsourcing less important tasks.
Alongside executing your plan, you need to find ways of changing your working day so that the tasks you have to do anyway help move you in the right direction towards what you dream of.
Let me end this post with two final pieces of advice:
If you cannot define what you personally dream of getting out of your job, you probably need a long holiday.
If you cannot find time to make a short-term plan that moves you towards what you dream of, it may be time to look for another job.
If you work with email marketing or loyalty programmes and want ideas for how to automate routine tasks and make working processes more efficient, I am always ready with advice and sparring, no strings attached.
